Brown does not support academic boycotts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Statement From President Christina H. Paxson
Three U.S. scholarly organizations have supported a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. Brown University President Christina Paxson has issued the following statement opposing academic boycotts and supporting the statement of the Association of American Universities, of which Brown University is a member.

"Brown University does not support academic boycotts against Israel or any other country. To do so would be antithetical to open scholarly exchange and would inhibit the advancement of knowledge and discovery. Brown University is fully supportive of the statement of the Association of American Universities opposing the boycott of Israeli academic institutions.

As members of an academic community, faculty, students, and staff are free to express their own ideas and opinions on any issue. They speak as individuals, however, and do not speak for Brown as an institution.
The American Studies Association is one of the national scholarly organizations that has called for an academic boycott. Brown University is no longer a member of ASA. Its institutional membership expired June 30, 2013."
